Michigan Film Industry

Lots of local artists have had high hopes for opportunities in the Michigan film industry. I/ACT member Lynn Lim has worked as an extra in several movie productions.  The Grosse Pointe Art Center provided many artworks (through sale and rental) to the movie industry last year. Two more artist /actors I recently became aware of include Cindy Laferle (her art link) of Royal Oak and Victor Pytko of Birmingham.

The website for  Raleigh Studios is here. Their Detroit location is the former GM Truck and Bus manufacturing facility.  Last November, a representative from the studio was present at the Elmore Leonard Film Festival and stated that first phase of the facility should open in the Spring, 2011 and employ around 3,000 people.

An article in this morning's Detroit News also talks about efforts to support the film industry and references a study by Ernst & Young for the Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau which shows that every dollar spent in tax breaks generated $6 in economic activity. A copy of the 29 page document is available online.

Michigan Film First is organizing a meeting to preserve the film industry in Michigan.  RSVP via their website if you plan to attend.|

Organizational Meeting and "Friendraiser"

Other Things to Consider

The Oakland County Ideas Project has recently set up a web page. They are looking for suggestions about how to make Oakland County more efficient and effective.  Ideas are submitted and anyone can vote an idea up or down. They have an Arts & Culture category that already has a few suggestions.
It will be interesting to see how this develops.

The Cost of Creativity - How Artists Economically Improve Communities

This recent NPR - Michigan Radio documentary specifically talks about how metro Detroit artists are helping their communities.   More radio shows about local arts can be found here.
